BOLTON'S PURSAT GOLD 2016 • in-house 100% wild Oud • Pursat Cambodia
(100% wild in-house crafted artisanal Oud oil, authentic wild-harvested natural agarwood essential oil)
An incredibly lucky surprise discovery. We were sure we had uncovered all of the older small batch distillations by company founder Tony Bolton. Tucked away and forgotten, we recently uncovered this single tola of one of Tony’s early small-batch single-tree distillations. Absolutely Sublime.
• highlights: a wonderful combination of classic notes and a few exotic flourishes. Classic Pursat perfection with a few delicious surprises, then aged to perfection… Perfectly smooth, but intense and full.
• material: 100% wild Aquilaria crassna, from one single mature tree from a high mountain area of Pursat province of Cambodia.
• production: Distilled by Tony Bolton in 2016. Copper still with glass collector.
• notes of controversy: none, ultra smooth
• full scent description: This spectacular Oud features an exquisite, delightful, and impressively broad range of beautiful and sophisticated classic Oud notes and a few less common flourishes. Extremely full, rich, and quite dynamic while also remaining smooth and clean; the transitions between notes here are smooth and pleasant. The word “symphony” is so overused in so many aromatic descriptions, but the word applies perfectly here. It is a full Symphony Orchestra of classic Pursat high altitude Oud perfection.
Opens with red berry notes, vanilla pod, the finest extra-old smooth dark rum, ripe black cherry and apples with a gentle accompaniment of simmering sweet brown spices (cassia, allspice, nutmeg). There are unusual and delightful clay and talc notes here that add a subtle powdery or creamy aspect. There are very light soft natural leather and light tobacco notes in the background that provide structure and substrate carrying the other more prominent and dynamic early notes. As this superlative Oud begins to open up and transform on your skin, you'll begin a journey of exploration with a full ensemble of classic Oud notes, and a just a few somewhat more exotic Oud notes, all in a magnificent progressive harmony; orange marmalade, candied citrus peel, raisins, dried apricot, the finest gourmet dates, apple brandy, fig jam, fresh grape, port wine, sweet brown dessert spices, appley-buttery baked goods, palm sugar, fudge, pineapple jam, cinnamon, finest black peppercorn, new lumber, carpenter’s shop, light tobacco, light cigar and cigar humidor (without smoke), rosewood, all find their moments here. Extremely long lasting and rich. 12 hours into the dry down it's a gorgeous marmalade, strawberry jam, carpenter’s shop, and top shelf cigar humidor finish.
What makes this Oud special is that it has absolutely no rough edges but has a wonderful range and movement of different notes from the very classic to the less common. The opening red berry notes, vanilla, and dark rum are very special, as well as the powdery clay and talc aspects which last well into the heart of this delicious Oud.
The strawberry note and Oud:
The presence of a wild strawberry note is a somewhat common in Oud oils from higher altitude areas of the Pursat and Pailin provinces of Cambodia (along with the even more common apple notes that more clearly define this terroir), in the case of this particular Oud oil, the wild strawberry note is very prominent in the early stages of the dry-down, and then becomes more a strawberry jam or cooked strawberry impression deeper into the dry-down.
