…opulent, vivacious, vibrant “single-distillation” rose essential oil.
A custom crafted Rose “first-distillation” created exclusively for Aroma Sublime by our dear friends at Switzerland-based specialty aromatics company, Scentient Nature, who oversee the production of this gorgeous, single estate, traditionally hydro-distilled premium rose oil on-location in the Himalayan Hindu Kush region.
Already offering some of the very best rose oil we've ever encountered, we made a special request to Scentient Nature for an adjustment to their production process. Sometimes called “first fraction”, “first distillation”, or “single-distillation”, in this type of process we keep only the essential oil from the earliest cycle of the normal distillation process.
Normally (and traditionally) the hydrosol would be carefully re-introduced into the distillation vessel multiple times, increasing essential oil yield, yet still producing a superlative product when done properly. For a single-distillation like this one we isolate only the earliest output of essential oil with no recycling of the hydrosol whatsoever. This requires up to three times the volume of fresh rose blossoms that is normally required for a more traditional rose oil distillation to obtain the same amount of precious oil. The result is an opulent, vivacious, vibrant and almost indescribably bright and vital “living” rose essential oil.
Scent Description:The earliest moments feature a bright citrus intensity, both the juice and fresh zest of lemon, grapefruit, yuzu, and a touch of kaffir lime. Rose soon blossoms clearly and magnificently, dewy rose buds awakening in the early morning sun. Electric citrus notes continue to sparkle and dance among the sun kissed blossoms. A gentle, light, peridot-green aspect harmonizes perfectly (without bitterness or coldness) evoking the freshly trimmed rose bush itself, dewy and scintillant in the early morning sun. …My repeated use of the word “dewy” here is not hyperbolic. The overall impression here is absolutely “dewy”! It is lush, alive, moist, fresh, and vibrating with immediacy and life force more than any other rose oil I have ever experienced.
Later into the dry-down the sun rises, and the overall impression becomes more solar and more purely and intensively floral, extending beyond rose alone to lavender, cornflower, lilac, violet and perhaps other florals. A soft, cozy, spicy aspect emerges featuring fine allspice and clove most prominently. There are delicate threads of green herbaceous notes here including fresh rosemary, spearmint, thyme, and others for the attentive nose to uncover. Deeper into the dry-down the lush, vibrant, and juicy early impressions have mellowed into an opulent floral and delicately spicy talc featuring all of the previously mentioned floral and spice notes but in a more silky, creamy, and powdery affect. Different from, but no less satisfying than the opening, there are moments here, late in the dry-down, when I almost cannot believe I’m smelling just rose oil, but rather some gorgeous master composition.
The question is often asked when trying to describe a rose oil, is it a cool rose or a warm rose? (I have a slight bias for cooler rose oils, but I can definitely appreciate the warmer variations. And it must also be said that this house, Scentient Nature, has a tendency to produce slightly warmer rose oils overall, that are some of the most impressive and exciting I have ever encountered.)
Kush Single Reserve Rose Oil 2024 is a lovely middle ground between cool and warm, with an incomparable degree of vitality and complexity. (description by Pierre Black, October 2025)
Already aged more than one year at the time of release, we are excited to see how this oil will benefit from further aging. (The best quality rose oil ages beautifully when correctly stored. Kept in the dark with reasonable temperature stability, high-quality rose oil will change and develop favorably and interestingly for many years.)
Kush Single Reserve Rose Oil 2024 is distilled in a wood-fired copper pot, and crafted entirely on-site at the estate. Ultra-traditional distillation techniques and organic cultivation create an impeccable rose oil originating from the original geographic seat of ancient Damascena rose cultivation going back millennia. The organically cultivated rose buds are harvested early in the morning and distilled immediately. This rose estate and facility already works consistently and exclusively with well established traditional craft methodologies and in the original geography of the species, and the single-distillation process we chose for this particular production provides an additional refinement, making this a pinnacle collectors edition rose oil among all the rose oils we have ever offered at Aroma Sublime.

Also known as the Damask rose, the Rosa x damascena species is a natural hybrid that occurred most likely by chance through cross-pollination, roughly where Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan meet, an estimated 7000 years ago. (Rosa gallica, Rosa fedschenkoana, and Rosa moschata are implicated.) Probably noticed by humans in the region for its remarkable scent and medicinal properties, archeological studies have uncovered evidence of both press extraction and crude distillation of Damascena rose flowers going back an unbelievable 6000 years. And so began the journey of this exquisite scent into aromatic history as it spread into the surrounding lands and cultures over millennia to take its place as a now renowned and revered aromatic for the well-being and sheer joy of body, mind, and spirit.
