VIET ZENITH SUBLIME 2025 • 100% wild Oud • Quang Nam, Vietnam
VIET ZENITH SUBLIME 2025 • In-house production 100% wild Oud oil • Quang Nam, Vietnam
(100% wild Oud oil, authentic wild-harvested natural agarwood essential oil)
• production: May 2025 distillation by Tha Bolton at Aroma Sublime headquarters in our copper still with glass collector. Distilled from only 2 fully mature wild trees from Quang Nam province, southern Vietnam.
• primary scent features: sweet & clean but still dynamic, featuring complex yellow and orange fruit, apple, complex wood, light fresh tobacco, creamy, slightly floral.
• scent description: We might often expect sweeter and cleaner Oud proflies to be less dynamic, more simple and straightforward in their unfolding. Not the case here. This one offers a subtle magic, offering a surprisingly dynamic movement inside a complex variety of mainly fruit and wood elements. Its not light, but rather its full and rich within the strict spectrum of these note categories. It’s incredibly approachable, silky smooth, and utterly delightful without sacrificing richness or longevity.
Opens strong with antique wood, apple, light blonde tobacco, candied citrus zest. Very quickly a journey begins: A multitude of fruity and woody expressions and moods (but with a noticable absence of other very common Oud notes like heavier tobacco, leather, and spices) and the preponderant sweetness aligns with the myriad fruit notes, offering a smooth-sweet impression, rather than a more aggressive sharp-sweet experience as some Ouds feature. Tobacco and leather notes are ineffably light and clean, intermittent, and weave delicately among the other notes.
Notes on notes: At quite a rapid pace, you might notice blood orange, lemon tart, more candied citrus zest, orange marmalade, fresh apple, dried apricot, raisins, apple cider, white grape, muscat, pear, apple, baked pear, jackfruit, lemon pound cake, apple strudel… The woody notes morph and meander, the antique wood becoming new wood and carpenters shop, then for a moment, crisp cedar, then back again to antique cherry and mahogany. Very soft and light tobacco and leather notes come and go every so discreetly. The citrus notes against the antique wood sometimes evoke a nostalgic vintage “furniture polish” feel; antique wood cared for traditionally with lemon oil. There is an unusual creamy or milky aspect that weaves in and out, especially delightful when it lines up with certain fruit notes; giving the impression of apple pie with cream, or cream and marmalade on a simple cake. Theres a warm floral and grassy aspect that begins to emerge at the heart, like sunshine on a field of wildflowers, a feature which lingers and intensifies from heart to base. There are moments of cooked pumpkin and sweet potato, also especially delicious when simultaneous to the intermittent creamy note.
(While the invocation of various baked goods might inspire us to try to locate sweet spice notes that are also found in so many Ouds of the same realm, spice notes don’t seem to be here.)
Viet Zenith Sublime is a real show stopper; completely approachable but extremely dynamic, complex, and rich in its movement. We are extremely proud of this one. It's the kind of Oud we are famous for.
• notes of controversy: none, sweet & clean yet still dynamic
• species: Aquilaria crassna

Give it to me straight… from the bottle?
A note on how we describe and assess Oud.
Our Oud oil descriptions never include aromatic impressions when the oil is sniffed straight from the bottle, or for the first 60 seconds after it is applied to your skin, since most Oud will initially present itself so intensely and overwhelmingly in those moments, that a scent analysis would be irrelevant and misleading. The scent descriptions we offer typically begin about 60 seconds after application to skin or other test substrate. Read more on this topic in our Learning Center.

• Absolutely wild. When we say wild, we mean wild! All our “wild” designated agarwood and oil is from genuine 100% naturally occurring wild forest agarwood trees with no human interventions prior to harvest. Occasionally we might offer other options, but they will be clearly indicated as either “cultivated” (farmed) or “semi-wild” (agarwood growth influenced by human intervention in a natural setting). When we say wild, we mean wild! Learn more on this topic in our Learning Center article: Sustainability in Sourcing Wild Agarwood: How Aroma Sublime is Meeting The Challenge
• "Oud" versus "agarwood" disambiguation: For our purposes, here on the Aroma Sublime website, "Oud" will usually refer to the essential oil of agarwood, and "agarwood" to the raw wood itself. This website's terminology seeks to reflect the most common English usage for each form of the materials. It should be noted that for many English speakers, "Oud" might also refer to the raw wood, particularly among connoisseurs. Read more on this here.
• One-tree wonders. We strongly prefer single-tree agarwood harvests and single-tree Oud oil distillations. This has both environmental and aesthetic benefits, capturing the unique essence of a single, fully mature, agarwood tree. When this single-tree preference is not possible we strongly favor combining wood from only a few fully mature trees from the same geography, of known provenance, supplied by trusted and experienced harvesters. (the only exception would be in the case of carefully planned blends or co-distillations which we always describe with precision.) More and more you will see us moving toward single-tree productions. It’s part of our commitment to sustainability and our joy in honoring the individual aromatic “soul” of each tree we harvest. Learn more on this topic here.
• Beyond Words. We try to describe our Oud oils as accurately as possible using common vocabulary from a Western cultural perspective. There might also be some specialized technical or aromatic nomenclature as we seek also to educate and inform our customers. We hope to strike a balance; offering accessibility and straightforwardness while also providing some technical and specialized vocabulary when we think it is informative or necessary. Our Oud descriptions are subjective and may vary slightly over time due to the effects of aging on Oud's aromatic profile, however, Oud oils will generally only improve with age, and the key features of a particular oil will generally be quite stable over time. We try to repeat the assessment process and update the detailed aromatic description for every Oud oil in our catalog at least once every 12 months. We pride ourselves on detailed accurate descriptions of our Oud oils, and we are happy to receive your constructive feedback on this topic.
